Tasting Notes
Vigna Vecchia — "old vineyard" — is the Mattioli family's direct-press white from their oldest Trebbiano Spoletino vines, trellised as in the traditional Umbrian peasant manner. Where Terra dei Preti takes Trebbiano Spoletino through the long ribollito maceration, Vigna Vecchia is a different interpretation: the grapes are pressed directly without skin contact, then fermented spontaneously in open-top vats and aged in cement, stainless steel or fibre glass before bottling. It is a wine of absolute purity and mineral restraint in its youth, evolving slowly to reveal remarkable depth. "In its youth it is slow and neutral," as one importer describes it, "and over time it refines, acquiring mineral notes of great purity and a visceral connection with the territory." The palate is acidic and saline, the antithesis of an overtly fruity style, a wine that demands patience but rewards it handsomely. Ideal with truffle preparations, scorzone summer truffles in particular, alongside umami-rich dishes, aged cheeses and as a serious table white. Good alone with real attention given to it.
